Bharmour – is beautiful town surrounded by high lush green mountains located at a distance of 62 km from Chamba. Bharmour is often referred as the land of Shiva because of belief that lord Shiva resides at mountain Kailash which is located in this area Bharmour is also popular because of its proximity with Manimahesh Lake, Manimahesh Kailash and Chaurasi (84) ancient temples, which are reflecting the glorious past of this hidden town. Bharmour is also known as the Abode of Shiva as there are numerous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in and nearby regions.

Manimahesh lake – is a marble image of Shiva which is worshipped by the pilgrims who visit this place. After bathing in the holy waters, the pilgrims go around the circumference of the lake three times. The lake and its surroundings present a majestic view. The quiet waters of the lake carry the reflection of snowcapped peaks that carry over the valley.

Legends say that the lake was created by Lord Shiva after he married Goddess Parvati. As per another account, it is also claimed that Lord Shiva performed penance here for seven hundred years, and the water started flowing from his tangled hair, which later took the form of a lake. The lake is in the shape of the saucer and is divided into 2 major parts. The larger part is known as ‘Shiv Karotri’ (the bathing place of Lord Shiva); meanwhile the lower part is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, ‘Gauri Kund’ (the bathing place of Parvati).

Manimahesh – According to one popular legend, it has believed that Lord Shiva created Manimahesh after he married Goddess Parvati and performed penance on the banks of Manimahesh Lake. It has mentioned that Gaddis (Local tribes of the region), adopted Lord Shiva as their deity. They are the people who live in the Bharmour Valley. The Gaddis started calling this mountainous region as ‘Shiv Bhumi’ (Land of Shiva) and themselves as devotees of Shiva. The legend further states that before Shiva married Parvati at Mansarovar Lake and became the “universal parents of the universe”, Shiva created the Mount Kailash in Himachal Pradesh and made it his home. He made Gaddis his devotees.

Manimahesh has also considered the home of the three Lords of the universe, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Manimahesh has reckoned as the heaven of Lord Shiva (Kailasa). The waterfall seen at the Dhancho on the way to Manimahesh Lake, which emanates from the lake, has considered as the heaven of Vishnu (Vaikunta). The heaven of Bramha has cited as a mount overlooking the Bharmour town. The Gaddis also believe that Shiva resides in the Mount Kailash for six months, thereafter he moves to the netherworld handing over the reins to Lord Vishnu. The day he departs to the netherworld has observed reverentially every year on Janmashtami day, the birthday of Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Shiva returns from the netherworld to Bharmour at the end of February, before the night of his wedding and this day has observed as the Shivratri day. Locals observe this as a festive day as Shiva and Parvati returned to Mount Kailash on this day.
