The Sikh temple of Hemkund Sahib is one of the most renowned in the entire world. Due to its spectacular elevation of 4636 m, this sacred place is even more well-known. This important Sikh pilgrimage site, tucked away in the Garhwal Himalayas, attracts a lot of pilgrims each year from all over the world before it closes for the winter between October and April. Sikh pilgrims first begin to gather at Hemkund Sahib in May to assist in mending the route that was destroyed over the winter months before conducting their trip. Kar Seva, or selfless service, is the name of this custom and plays a significant role in the Sikh faith.

Along with a beautiful lake, Hemkund Sahib is home to worshippers who enjoy swimming there. In Hindu mythology, Hemkunt Sahib was referred to as Lokpal, a lake that served as Lakshman’s meditation grounds. Lakshman was Lord Rama’s brother. Hemkund is a stringent area for Sikhs, particularly those from northern India, and a startling valley with wonderful styles and blending points of view. This valley offers magnificent vistas and all-encompassing perspectives for hikers and adventure seekers, and its unspoiled beauty is evocative of the magnificent scenery.

Religious Relevance

Regarding the importance of Sikh history, the quest to find Shri Hemkund Sahib began in the latter part of the eighteenth century. The shrine is described in the Dasam Granth, a book that the tenth GuruGuru wrote outlining his vision and principles for the Sikhism of the future. Bhai Santokh Singh, a writer from the Sikh community, was the first to guess about Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s seat of meditation in 1843. Still, it was when Pandit Tara Singh Narotam, a scholar from the Nirmila community, could pinpoint its site. Through the work of a Sikh scholar named Bhai Vir Singh, Shri Hemkund Sahib began to change much later and eventually evolved into what it is now.

The Hemkund Sahib Gurdwara

“The Lake of Snow” is the meaning of the Sanskrit name Hemkund, which is formed from the words “Hem” (Snow) and “Kund” (bowl). Pandu Raja allegedly practised yoga here, according to the Dasam Granth. Major General Harkirat Singh, the Chief Engineer of the Indian Army, built the current Gurudwara sometime in the 1960s. He chose architect Siali to plan and build this holy pilgrimage destination, which was designed considering the surrounding landscape and climatic circumstances. This Gurudwara is the only pentagonal one in existence. It is said that Guru Govind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh guru, meditated at Hemkund Sahib for a long period. Hemkund Sahib, located at an elevation of 4,329 metres above sea level, is the highest Gurudwara for Sikh people.

Hemkund Lake

The seven enormous mountains around the Hemkund. There is also a sacred lake, which freezes over in the winter. Hemkund Lake, a spotless tiny water feature that contributes to the beauty of this location, is located adjacent to the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara. Visitors to Hemkund Sahib take a soak in the water of this holy lake. Devotees believed all sins might be wiped away by plunging into the lake.

Valley Of Flowers

Near Hemkund Sahib lies the renowned Valley of Flowers. This lovely location is accessible from Ghangharia, where the routes to Hemkund Sahib and the VOF split off. This high-altitude national park’s great diversity of flora is well recognised and is in full flower during the monsoon season.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Hemkund Sahib is in late spring, which starts in June, and post-monsoon, which lasts from mid-September until mid-October. The explanation is related to the climate of the region. Due to the excessive height, the winter months risk receiving a lot of snow and being quite cold. It is the best season to visit Hemkund Sahib since the precipitation is still conducive to travel from May to October. A little conduit called Himaganga pours out of the lake, which has been taken care of with the help of frozen masses from the Saptrishi and Hathi Parvat slopes.

The most fashionable months to travel in Hemkund Sahib are May and June when the weather warms up. The snow melts, making the journey a little less difficult. September and October, when the weather cools off, but the path is covered in high foliage, making for a friendly encounter.

The trailhead for the hike to Hemkund Gurudwara and the Valley of Flowers is Govindghat, located on the Alaknanda River’s banks. The last place people live is Ghangaria, between Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers.
