Agra is the city of Taj Mahal- an epitome of eternal love. It is just 215 Km from the national capital Delhi & approx. 50 Km from world famous hindu pilgrimage centre Mathura. It is also among the best weekend getaways for a two day trip from Delhi-NCR. Similarly it is one of India’s most popular tourist sites. Agra was first mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, where it was called Agrevana, which signifies the forest boundary. The first to move his capital from Delhi to Agra in 1504, was Sultan Sikandar Lodi (1488-1517). His son Ibrahim Lodi continued to rule after his death in 1517, until his defeat at the hands of the Mughal Emperor Babur in the first battle of Panipat in 1526. From 1526 until 1658, Agra was famously the capital of the Mughal Emperors.

Every year in February, the Taj Mahotsav is celebrated by the Department of Tourism which attracts national and international tourists to Agra. The festival honours Mughal art, culture and is a profusion of performances of music and dance, a food festival and mela crafts.

How to Reach Agra

By Road – The many cities and towns, such as Delhi, Gwalior, Kanpur, Lucknow and Jaipur, is well connected by road. Also comfortable buses to Agra are easlily available. There are majorly two prime bus terminals in Agra, namely Idgah Bus Stand and ISBT and there are buses for all major destinations available here. Those driving from Delhi by road to Agra can take NH 2 route. Similarly while those traveling from Jaipur can take road NH 11. The world class Delhi-Agra Taj Expressway significantly reduced travel time to the area. Also making the drive itself extremely pleasurable.

By Train – Agra is located in the middle of the main train routes of country: Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai, needless to say that it is quite easy to get here by train from almost every corner of the country. Cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Gwalior, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai have daily train to this city. Regular trains run from Delhi such as Bhopal Express, Punjab Mail, Malwa Express and UP Sampark Kranti. Tourists may hire a prepay taxi, take a car-rickshaw or rickshaw to reach their destination after entering the railway station.

By Air – Agra airport known as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Airport. Also, It is a military airbase as well as public serving airport. As of now, Air India operates flights to Gwalior and Khajuraho from Airport. Other cities like Rajkot, Madurai, Agartala, Gorakhpur, Jamnagar, Jabalpur and Varanasi are also connects via indirect routes.The closest domestic and international airport is Delhi Airport.
