Overview

Mathura is the birthplace of Lord Krishna who is very beloved. Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Mathura and Vrindavan are also called twin towns (located only 10 km away). Mathura is a small town dotted with temples from various ages, drawing a swarm of tourists from around the world. One side of Mathura is spread across the Yamuna River, lined with 25 ghats, which are best visited in the morning when you can see local people and visitors taking a holy dip, and in the morning (just after sunset) when hundreds of diyas float during the daily aarti.

During the two major festivals-Janmashtami (the birthday of Lord Krishna) in August / September, and Holi in February / March, Mathura is filled with visitors and pilgrims. The most popular tourist attraction in Mathura is Shri Krishna Janmabhumi, as this place is believed to be the exact place where Lord Krishna was born, and the prison where he was born is now on show for tourists to see.
