Shankaracharya Temple

The sacred temple of Shankaracharya is located at hill top of southeast Srinagar. A mesmerising view of Srinagar city, Dal Lake and Pir Panjal mountain range is visual treat from this place. Dating back to 250 BC, it’s believed that Shankaracharya temple built on the place where the good philosopher and saint Shankaracharya stayed when he visited Kashmir ten centuries ago to revive Santana Dharma. it had been then that this place came to be known by his name rather than its former name Gopadri, an earlier edifice built on an equivalent site by king Lalitaditya within the 6th century AD. Built on a high octagonal plinth and approached by a flight of steps, it’s sidewalls that when bore inscriptions and therefore the main surviving shrine consists of a circular cell. A huge lingam of Lord Shiva is worshiped here. It’s an integral part of Kashmir tour package.
